Choose flight activities that do not need much clearing up

A good flight activity is easy to start, stop and put away when the tray table suddenly needs to be cleared.

Try it on a small surface

Before adding an activity to the flight bag, imagine using it in the space of a tray table. Can your child reach the pieces without dropping them? Can it be closed when food arrives or the crew asks for the table to be stowed? Does it still work if an adult has only one hand free?

A small drawing pad with a few pencils, a familiar book, reusable activity cards or an age-appropriate contained puzzle can fit that setting. Check small parts for suitability. An impressive craft kit may be enjoyable at home and frustrating when the glue, pieces and backing papers spread across a narrow row.

Test a new item briefly before travelling. This is less about teaching your child to use it perfectly than discovering whether it needs scissors, an internet connection, fresh batteries or constant adult help. Pack what makes it usable, not just its main component.

Bring variety without carrying a toy cupboard

Choose a few different kinds of attention: something to look at, something to make marks with, and something to listen to if that suits your child. A familiar favourite can be as useful as a surprise. You do not have to provide a new entertainment item for every portion of the flight.

If you use downloaded programmes or games, confirm they work offline and check the device charge. Use suitable headphones and follow the crew's instructions about devices and storage. Keep any charging equipment in accordance with the relevant airline and security rules.

Let activities end when interest fades. You can put one away and leave a short gap without immediately presenting the next thing. Watching out of the window, talking about what is happening or simply sitting together can be part of the journey too.

Pack used activities back into the same pouch so they remain findable on a connection or the journey home. At the end of the flight, a bag containing three complete activities is more useful than a larger collection missing its pencils, counters and instructions. Choose the things your family can manage in the space you actually have.
