Pack the school bag from the school’s own list

Start with the school’s requirements, then make the bag easy for your child to find things in and carry.

Use the current list

Find the equipment guidance for your child's actual class and year. A general back-to-school shopping list may include things this school supplies or does not allow. Ask about unclear items before buying, particularly if a product has several local names or sizes.

Separate daily belongings from items needed on particular days. Keep the timetable or reminder where bags are packed. A swimming kit that travels every day adds bulk while making it harder to find the pencil case that is actually needed.

Pack it with the person who will use it

Let your child put items into the compartments and practise finding them. A system that makes sense to an adult may not be obvious to a young child in a busy classroom. Use a small number of consistent places rather than separate pouches for every possible item.

Label belongings according to the school's guidance. Choose labels that help staff return an item without displaying unnecessary personal information publicly. Check whether the school has requirements for names on uniforms, bottles or equipment.

Try containers and fastenings before the first day. If a child cannot open a lunch box or close a bottle independently, either practise together or choose a more suitable design. Ask staff what assistance is available rather than relying on another child to help.

Make the evening check brief

Empty food containers, remove papers that need adult attention and replace used items. Avoid quietly repacking the entire bag every night while the child remains unaware of where anything goes. Share the task according to their age and abilities.

Check that the bag is comfortable and contains only what is needed. Follow the school's guidance and seek appropriate advice if carrying it causes discomfort. Adding emergency supplies for every imaginable situation can make the ordinary journey harder.

Keep occasional items in a visible home storage spot. When tomorrow's kit is ready, stop. A bag is a tool for the school day, not a complete inventory of the family's preparedness.
