Start with the school's own calendar
Use the current calendar from your child's school, not a general holiday list for the country. Different schools or age groups may follow different dates. Check whether a date is confirmed and whether it applies to your child. Keep the link or original notice so you can return to it when another message appears to conflict.
Transfer the dates that affect attendance first: term beginnings and endings, closures, staff training days, examinations or early finishes where relevant. Then add events that need family participation. A photograph of a calendar is useful as a reference, but it will not remind you that next Tuesday needs a different collection plan.
Add the consequence beside the date
For each unusual day, write what needs arranging. “School closed” is information; “school closed—confirm care by Friday” is an action. If another adult is responsible, agree that explicitly. A shared calendar entry does not automatically mean everyone has noticed it or understood who will act.
Include collection times where they change, and distinguish an event children attend during school from one parents are invited to. Avoid filling the household calendar with every school announcement. Keep what changes a decision, a journey or a commitment, and store the rest where it can be found.
Check before making a booking
Before paying for travel or arranging visitors, verify the relevant dates with the school again. A calendar saved months earlier may have been updated, and a holiday in one child's school may not match another's. Ask the school about any attendance question rather than assuming that a cheap travel date will be acceptable.
Make a brief calendar check part of the week. Look far enough ahead to catch forms, equipment and childcare arrangements that require notice. When a date changes, update the original entry instead of adding a second one that leaves both versions visible. The calendar should help the household make the next decision, not become another noticeboard nobody trusts.
