Unpack around the next morning

A functioning morning matters more than emptying the most boxes on the first evening.

Set up the next few hours

Unpacking a whole room can feel satisfying while leaving the family unable to find breakfast bowls or clean socks. Before opening boxes at random, decide what needs to work tonight and tomorrow morning. That usually means somewhere to sleep, a usable bathroom, a small eating area and the belongings needed to leave the house.

Check the accommodation before assigning permanent homes to everything. Notice storage, access and any existing equipment. A sensible arrangement on paper may not work once you see where the doors open or how narrow a cupboard is.

Open the boxes marked for early use first. If labels are vague, consult the inventory instead of spreading the contents of several boxes across the floor. Keep one clear surface available for meals and paperwork while the rest of the home is in progress.

Make a place for the everyday items

Put keys, chargers and documents in agreed temporary locations. They do not need perfect organisers; they need to stop moving from one pile to another. Tell the other adults where these things are, and make the arrangement simple enough for children to follow where appropriate.

Invite each child to establish a small part of their sleeping or play space. A few books on a shelf and a familiar toy within reach can be a complete task. They do not need to sort all their belongings on arrival.

Stop before the household stops working

Flatten packaging and keep routes through the home clear as you go. A home full of open boxes can become harder to use than one with closed boxes waiting along a wall. Follow any building arrangements for disposing of packaging rather than filling shared spaces.

At the end of the day, prepare what the next morning requires and leave the remaining boxes alone. Write down one or two priorities for the next session. The measure of progress is whether daily life is becoming easier, not how quickly every container disappears.
