Moving abroad

Keep an address-change list with a clear owner

Record who will update each organisation, when the change takes effect and whether it has been confirmed.

Build the list from real correspondence

An address-change list is easier to trust when it comes from the services your family actually uses. Review recent post, relevant account records and regular household arrangements. Include organisations that still need to contact you even if the relationship is ending.

For each entry, record the organisation, the person responsible, the intended effective date and the result. A simple table is sufficient. Avoid putting account passwords or unnecessary identity details into a document that will be widely shared.

Some updates concern one person, while others affect the household. Name that distinction in the entry. Updating an adult's contact details does not necessarily update a child's school record or another adult's separate account.

Keep a change separate from a notification

Telling someone you are moving is not always the same as completing their address-change process. Follow the organisation's current instructions and check whether it requires a secure account update, a form or supporting information. Use its official contact route rather than a link in an unexpected message.

Where there are different address types, read the labels carefully. A correspondence address, current residence and delivery address may serve different purposes. Ask the organisation if you are unsure which information belongs in which field, especially during a temporary stay.

Record a submitted update as submitted until there is a reason to mark it complete. A confirmation message or a corrected account record can close the task. This avoids two adults both assuming that the other has checked the result.

Revisit the temporary address

If the first home abroad is temporary, put a second review in the calendar. Otherwise the address used for those early weeks can remain on records long after the family has moved again.

Check any forwarding arrangement separately, including its scope, start date and end date. It can support the transition but should not become the only plan for important correspondence. Ask a trusted person handling residual post to follow an agreed approach to privacy and delivery.

Once updates are complete, retain the confirmations you need and simplify the working list. Its purpose is to make a finite set of changes visible, not to become another household document that needs constant maintenance.
