Pack for the weekend you actually planned

Use the actual activities, weather and accommodation to decide what earns space in a weekend bag.

Read the plan before the packing list

A two-night visit to relatives, a wet walking weekend and a city break with a kitchen do not need the same bag. Write down where you will sleep and the main activities you have actually agreed. Then check the forecast close enough to departure to make it useful.

Choose clothes that work together and can cover more than one part of the trip. For children, include a reasonable change for spills or weather, based on their age and usual needs. There is a difference between a useful spare and several outfits for events that are not on the itinerary.

Check what the accommodation provides before packing bulky items. Towels, bedding, laundry facilities and child equipment should be confirmed with the host or property, especially if your plans depend on them. A photograph of a cot or kitchen is not a complete description of what is included in your booking.

Keep the first few hours accessible

The bag you need during the journey should not require opening the main suitcase at a roadside stop or busy station. Separate the things needed before you reach the room: documents, suitable food, a change of clothes and whatever your child uses during travel.

Pack one small familiar activity for downtime rather than assuming the weekend must stay busy. A book or drawing pad can work at breakfast, during a wait and before bed. If you bring a device, check its charger and any offline content before leaving.

Leave a way to separate worn or wet items on the return journey. Even a short trip creates laundry, and a bag that only closes when every item is folded perfectly can become annoying on the final morning.

Before closing it, remove anything whose only reason for being there is “perhaps we will need it”. Keep genuinely essential care items and documents; reconsider the extra shoes, large toys and duplicate accessories. The point is not to travel with the smallest possible bag. It is to carry enough for the weekend you planned without bringing an imaginary second trip along.
