Moving abroad

Which belongings should travel with you?

Arrival timing matters as much as value when deciding what belongs in a suitcase and what can follow later.

Think in two arrival dates

A shipment and a family rarely reach a new home in exactly the same way. Even an estimated delivery week leaves uncertainty about the day you can actually open the boxes. Pack the belongings that support daily life as though the shipment will be unavailable for a while.

This does not mean duplicating an entire household in luggage. Walk through an ordinary morning and evening. Which clothes, chargers, comfort items and personal essentials are needed to get through them? Which things could be borrowed, bought in a small quantity or temporarily done without?

Keep original documents and other items you must personally access within your own arrangements. Check the carrier's current rules for anything restricted, fragile or unusual; the right category cannot be determined simply by whether it fits in a bag.

Give awkward items a reason to travel

Some objects are difficult to replace even when their purchase price is low. A familiar book in the family's home language, a particular school item or a small piece of equipment used every day may deserve luggage space. Explain the reason in the packing list so it is not removed later as an apparently optional extra.

Consider whether an item will be usable on arrival. A device without the correct accessories may occupy space without solving a problem. A favourite kitchen tool is only helpful if the accommodation has the rest of the equipment required to use it.

Put a clear note on anything waiting for a final decision. “Travel with us if the temporary flat has no linen” is more useful than “Maybe suitcase.” Resolve the condition before bags are weighed and closed.

Label by when you need it

For the shipment, use labels that describe contents and priority. “Kitchen, everyday bowls and mugs” gives more information than “Kitchen 7.” Keep the matching inventory accessible outside the shipment.

Within luggage, a small first-evening group prevents every suitcase being emptied to find pyjamas. The remaining clothes can stay packed until there is time and space to organise them. Adults should both know where shared essentials are, particularly if bags are divided between people.

Review the plan when accommodation or shipping dates change. Moving one useful item into luggage early is easier than discovering its absence after the boxes have been collected.
